“Pieces of Us” 2021 Clay Tile Mural
A plaque is to be displayed next to the stating: “We are all pieces of a greater puzzle and we fill in the gaps with pieces of each other by putting all of our differences aside. ART1 Students created textured tiles that represent two of their personalities that are opposite in definition. ART2 classes made two tiles that symbolize a piece of who they are that they give to others and another of what they get in return that adds to their life. These tiles are filling in the gaps of ART3 student designs to create a unified image of who OHHS students are proud to be.” This mural began in a pandemic and a school year of untimely quarantines. Seven students in an ART3 class were determined and committed to completing a mural before they graduated in June 2021. They were successful and you will see the process of the creation pictured. It has not yet been hung up yet due to summer construction and administration lacking in communication of when it can be displayed at Ogemaw Heights High School. It is 7 panels that are each 90inx30in with 108 tiles each. Each mural was designed and created by one single student with additional tiles created by ART1 and ART2 students. Each mural is of an elective and CTE course at Ogemaw Heights High School- Theatre, Choir, Band, Art, Building Trades, Metals, Medical Science. All art students of 2021 have a tile on this installation.

Art Class Fundraiser 2019Students in all art classes created personalized magnets to sell at the Holiday Craft Show hosted by our local Music Boosters Club. Students were motivated to raise enough money so that all students could receive canvas and new paints for a special project.
Over $200 were raised which was just enough to get paints, new clay glazes and brushes for the art room. Also at this table we hosted a craft table for younger kids to create beaded wreaths and candy canes. |

Posterized Portrait PaintingsLearning Target: I will choose a spirit animal that I relate to based on personality or choose someone that inspires me daily. I will do this by taking a spirit animal quiz and then finding a photo of the animal using a search engine online. After this I will follow the steps Miss Dowd has given me to posterize my photo using Microsoft word and Google Docs for gridding. Then I will use the grid on my photo to help draw on my canvas that also has a grid on it with the correct ratio.
I know I have been successful if I chose a color harmony for my painting and mixed accurate tints and shades within the the drawing I have done on the canvas. The colors chosen are a color harmony and paint is applied well with enough layers and done accurately with creative though to the background. |

Plaster Figures in Motion- Short Story Writing
Learning Target: I will create a figure in motion that is using a prop to tell a 55 word short story that I wrote. I will do this by creating the armatures of foil and then covering in plaster gauze to attach to the wooden base after the figure is secure in its motion. I will then begin to paint and add details to the figure including clothes, textures, scenery, etc. After the figure is done, I can give it a title and write my exact 55 word short story that is of what the figure is doing. I know I have been successful if the figure is sturdy in place, plaster application is neat and smooth, details are added to the character and my short story is well written being exactly 55 words.

Two Point Perspective- Architecture
Using 2 pt. perspective I will draw my Dream house that I have found online and placed it in a setting of your choice.

Fauvism Animal Portraits
Learning Target: I will paint my Fauvist Animal Portrait that has taped borders of an animal of my choosing. I will do this by drawing my animal largely on the poster board including creative elements like leaves or background borders. Then I will start painting using the color palette I planned in my sketchbook that are arbitrary in values of light to dark.
I know I have been successful if I draw accurately, paid attention to details that are important to the animal's identity, taped the edges neatly/evenly and have painted the entire paper using arbitrary colors that are organized by light to dark and are like a Fauvist artist (non-realistic, expressionistic colors). |

Clay Vessels
Learning Target: I will hand build a functional vessel with clay coils and clay tools. I will do this by using the clay coils to build the structure while also using the coils in three other ways besides construction to make a vessel that is at least 6in in height and has a functional purpose. My Vessel is able to hold at least 2 inches of water without leaks because the inside is smoothed entirely out while the coils remain see on the outside. I know I have been successful if my vessel is clean, attached by slip and score, used coils 3 different ways besides construction, is functional and is at least 6inches in height or width.

ART 2
Album Cover- Digital PaintingsLearning Target: I will design an album cover that reflects who I am as an artist and the story the songs will tell on the album after I have researched other successful album covers in the music industry. I will do this by learning the three factors in a successful album cover and making sure I use them in my own along with a creative title (1. Maximizing limited space 2. Having a single focus on an element 3. Good Marketing and artistic decisions) I will use Procreate on the iPads to design my album cover or use acrylic paint on Masonite boards.
I know I have been successful if the album cover represents who I am personally, placement of text is appropriate and creative, all three factors of an album cover are accomplished and I utilized various techniques within the Procreate App or with physical paint. |
|
More or Less ListsLearning Target: I will illustrate images that represent things that I want more of in 2021 and less of in 2021. I will do this by the inspiration of Julia Rothman’s article in the New York Time’s by first creating a list of items and then drawing them on 9x12 drawing paper (labeling is an option). After sketched and drawn to fill the page, I will then add details and blocking in with an ink pen/Sharpie.
I know I have been successful, if I drew artistically and neatly with the pen including some drawing techniques and also filled the page on each side for my More or Less list. Link to Julia Rothman’s Article: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/02/at-home/more-less-lists.html |
|
Scratch ArtLearning Target: I will create an artwork using only scratch marks after I learned the drawing techniques that creat value (stippling, hatching, cross hatching and stumbling). I will select an image and edit it so that it has high contrast in value. Using a white colored pencil, I created a rough draft before going to my final scratch board as I know that marks cannot be undone. I know I have been successful if my scratch artwork is neatly, cautiously done with find marks that show shadows and high lights by how close and far a part marks are.

Clay Whistles
Learning Target: I will create a clay whistle that whistles. I will do this by following the steps to create the the structure of the whistle and then adding at least 4 attachments and including texture transforming the whistle form into something new. I know I have been successful if my whistle works when I blow into the mouth piece, I have at least 4 attachments and texture, and the mouthpiece is included in the transformative design.

Power Portraits Inspired by Kehinde WileyLearning Target: I will choose a person that inspires my daily life that I know personally or because of an impact on society. I will then blend or inserted the person into a famous portrait/artwork that will raise them up to be the king/queen that they really are. Using an Ebony Pencil I will add a full range of value looking at my photo references so that the portrait is realistic and detailed using an eraser and blending stump as aid. For the background I will choose any materials I see fit.
I know I have been successful if the portrait has full range of value and detail with accurate drawing skills, is cut cleanly and pasted to my background paper and I have shown power in my portrait by adding elements of the famous artwork I chose. The goal was to create a Power Portrait since in the past, portraits were only painted for those who had wealth or power such as kings, queens, generals and dukes. The people chosen by students ranged from family members, to celebrities, to philosophers who are deceased. Kehinde Wiley inspired these portraits because of the way he chose people at random on the streets in Manhattan, NY and placed them into a historical portrait. The people selected were men of color and low economic status. He did not see himself recognized in art museums as a gay African American and wanted to make a change to portraiture. He did the portraits of Michelle and Barack Obama. |

Weekly Drawing AssignmentsIn ART2 students receive a prompt sheet to choose from to inspire a weekly drawing that is due every Monday with their choice of materials. The prompt sheet has more prompts than is needed so students have options to reach all interests.
They are required to fill the page, use materials that show artistic decisions, practice drawing skills and have good craftsmanship. A few examples are to the right. |

ART 3
Visual Journals
Students in both ART3 and Independent Study are to turn in a two page spread weekly using multi-media, art techniques, typography and drawing practices that follow a prompt of their choice. Students keep these journals/sketchbooks all year long as a diary of ideas that they can use on art projects. It is a book to make mistakes in, but also document the artistic process, emotions, personal events and connections to the world.

The Memory Project
The Memory Project is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting intercultural understanding and kindness between children around the world through school-based art programs. The organization strives to break cultural barriers, bring joy to children facing challenges, inspire creativity, and build a kinder world. Students in the ART3 course chose a portrait of a Syrian Child in 2020 and used color pencil skills after learning skin tone mixtures to create realistic portraits to be sent to Syria.
A video was then sent back to the class of the children receiving the portraits revealing the joy brought to their face as well as the keepsake they get to have on the bare walls of their home making it feel more like a home than a box. BY FAR, the most rewarding project the students have done and have said it is their favorite. |

2019 Hoco Photo Booth Backdrop
For the Homecoming Dance, students painted a three panel mural that included every classes' theme. That year's theme was Around the World. Egypt, Paris, England and Hawaii were all represented. Students worked together to create a mural that would flow and be unified in style. The mural was used as a photo booth back drop for the dance.

Independent Study
Students develop a portfolio of artwork by completing a body of work on their own. Students challenge themselves in media, idea and with time constraints. They follow a timeline of when projects are due and meet those deadlines. They also keep a visual journal to advance drawing skills and try new things.
Digital Media Class
This class mainly developed the monthly newsletters for the school and the bi-weekly news videos. These students became the eyes and ears for the student body paying attention to all the fantastic things OHHS does that not everyone may know. Below are examples of newsletters produced by my students during 2019-2020.
In Fall 2019, the Media class was able to take a field trip to 9&10 News Station organized by Ms. Dowd. We were given a tour of how the news is produced and also shown live on TV. Students loved the green screen and sitting behind the desk. During the pandemic, students learned about graphic design, typography, digital movies and overall production techniques since being in school was fluid with being online. |
