Everything you can IMAGINE is real. "
- Pablo Picasso
Art is a visual aesthetic that is generated from the influence of social experiences and cultural affiliations. Students in an art class are able to bring outside experiences through application of knowledge and skill into the classroom. By having a personal connection to a subject, makes learning capacity grow. In the education system, keeping engagement is vital as it influences the student's success. Art education promotes students to engage in learning activities, which can be a struggle in today’s classrooms as there are many distractions students bring into the learning environments. Living in an evolving society, we want kids to make good judgments. In art class, they will discover to live and think for themselves aside from the rules and restrictions that other core subjects can bring. Fortunately, there is more than one way of doing things in the art room.
With enthusiasm for developing young artists, students will gain motivation and confidence in their work producing art with effort. This will be assessed from multiple teaching strategies to measure growth and comprehension. Sketchbooks, portfolios, and self-evaluations will reveal growth from a student as they visually, physically, and abstractly think through material. I truly believe that art is hard work and not magic; however, art has magic. By practicing skills constantly and through effort, there is improvement.
Additionally, students are involved in aesthetic activities empathizing with others and improving social skills. Students are constantly socially interacting with others as they discuss thought processes of classmates’ artwork using art terminology. Critiques would be conducted after each project where students gain knowledge not only from me as the teacher, but also from other students. Not every student has the same cultural background and bringing those differences together through my teaching enhances student motivation. As a teacher with a leadership studies minor, I have grown to believe that I will forever believe in my students before they might believe in themselves. |
Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves and to explore what is possible." |
The art classroom is not just a teacher and student relationship, but a community where we learn from each other. That includes the educator: Me. I am a lifelong learner that will admit when I don't know something to encourage students that it is okay to not know everything because no one truly does. These social interactions with students allows me to develop projects that surround their interests. Adapting to their needs while meeting the curriculum will develop a relationship. Having a relationship with a student in the art classroom makes the time together productive. Students see me as approachable as well as someone that has developed a space that is safe.
